I began to get newcomer students who were openly “out” a few years ago. I had nobody to send them to who they could relate to or even communicate with. So I started a multilingual and multicultural GSA club, it didn’t serve as many kids as I had hoped, but some kids had a voice for a few months!
This group of kids believed that there should not be so many boxes like gay, straight, femme, Salvadorian, Mexican, girl, boy and so on. In this spirit they made this cool t-shirt design that we never had the money to print!
Throughout the year the club worked on a series that was aired in Open Source RVA on WRIR 97.3. Here is their first module about locker rooms, bullying and how teachers and counselors could better support students. During several study halls, I recorded their student led conversations.
WRIR 97.3 is an all volunteer radio station. Open Source RVA is Don Harrison with producer Krysti Albus and Chispa Media is Katie Whelan with producers Krysti Albus, Jay Westerman, and Daynee Rosales.
